Reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, my first WOW moment was when I realized that the little boy who "narrates" his story has met .... The Fury (the Fuhrer, HITLER). another WOW moment is when he "talks" about where his family has moved to...Out With (Auschwitz! a notorious concentration camp)
Share your WOW moments.....moments that make you think, learn a new fact, when you have a BIG question.....................
I know! I'm reading the same book and it amazes me that the little boy and his sister can't figure out what the concentration camp is even though it is right outside their window. Plus it is kind-of weird to me that the children don't know what their father does and they only know that it is "important." I can't imagine living like that when your parents are keeping such a secret like that from you. I wonder what they will think of their father if they find out what he actually does. Will they think like him or against him? I still haven't gotten very far. The father and Bruno are talking about the new house that Bruno hates.
ReplyDeleteOne of my wow moments were when I read how the Jews were taken to ovens and burned alive! I also never knew that children would go and hide in the trash (EEEHHHHWWWW) so that they'd not get caught by the officer picking who was killed. I also could not bear the thought of going squished in the boxcar with people dying all the time! Oh, and my book was the DEVIL'S ARITHMETIC.

ReplyDeleteMy WOW moment was when Bruno saw the camp, and suspected something unusual but didn't really go and try to find out what it was. I was also amazed at how little Bruno knew.

ReplyDeleteChildren of the Holocaust
ReplyDeleteMy WOW moment was when the lady who was an interviewer was trying to find children who have survived the Holocaust and when she starts interviewing them there stories were so devastating.
In my book, milkweed, my wow moment was hearing how little Misha is able too sneak in and out of the ghetto withought getting caught just to sneak in food for his friend
ReplyDeleteThe Devil's Arithmetic
ReplyDeleteIt surprised me when "Chaya's" best friend, Rivka, turned out to be "Hannah's" Aunt Eva, and "Rivka's" brother, Wolfe, turns out to be "Hannah's" Grandpa Will.
The Boy in The Striped Pajamas
ReplyDeleteMy WOW moment was the ending. You never would have expected it to happen!
My WOW moment was at the end of Milkweed, when Uri tries to kill Misha, and shoots his ear off.
ReplyDeleteDuring "In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer," the main character, Irene, realizes she can see into a concentration camp through the window of a restaurant she works at. I... Don't think an explanation is needed on why that's a WOW moment.
ReplyDeleteBoy in the Striped Pajamas
ReplyDeleteMy wow moment was when Bruno was right next to the camp and wanted to go and play. It amazes me how very little he knew.
My book was Lily's Crossing, and my WOW moment was when Lily's dad went to war as an engineer. Also when Albert and Lily meet again with Ruth (When Albert came to the U.S.A. from France his sister had measles and had to stay behind until the end of the war.) at the end of the book.
ReplyDeleteMy wow moment from Milkweed is when all the Jews in the ghetto were taken out to the could and they had to stand straight or then they would get hit
ReplyDeleteMy other WOW moment was when the Nazis were forcing a Jew to scrub the sidewalk with his beard. Then when they started to cut it off, Misha went up to them and said,"Take him to our place. We have a barbershop." He was really naive.
